Quick verdict

Spotify sells four Premium tiers in the US: Individual at $12.99/mo, Duo at $18.99/mo, Family at $21.99/mo, and Student at $6.99/mo. The cheapest per-person option is the Family plan split six ways; the best solo value is Student if you qualify. Duo exists for exactly two people at the same address who don't need a full family plan. All prices below are as of October 2026 — verify on Spotify's Premium page before you buy, since 2026 has already seen a price hike and listings update at different speeds.

Individual: $12.99/mo

The baseline tier. One account, ad-free listening, offline downloads, and on-demand playback on any device. This suits a single listener with nobody to split a plan with. The per-person math is simple and also the worst: $12.99 per person, the most expensive way to buy Spotify per head. If you live with even one other listener, Duo or Family beats this immediately.

Duo: $18.99/mo

Two separate Premium accounts for two people living at the same address. That works out to about $9.50 per person — each person saves roughly $3.50/mo compared with two Individual plans ($25.98 combined versus $18.99, about $7/mo saved overall). This suits couples or two roommates. The main difference from Family: it's capped at two accounts, with no dedicated kids' accounts or explicit-content filters.

Family: $21.99/mo

Up to six Premium accounts for people at the same address. Split six ways, that's about $3.67 per person; split four ways, about $5.50. It adds a Family Mix playlist and explicit-content filters for younger listeners' accounts. This suits any household of three or more — even three people at roughly $7.33 each come out ahead of the Student price. The address requirement is the catch: everyone on the plan needs to live at the same address, and Spotify does verify this.

Student: $6.99/mo

For students enrolled at accredited colleges and universities, verified through SheerID and re-verified each year (up to four years total). At $6.99/mo it's the cheapest solo option by a wide margin. The Student tier has also bundled Hulu's ad-supported plan in the US — bundle terms change, so confirm what's currently included on Spotify's page before counting on it. If you'd pay for Hulu anyway, the effective cost of the music side drops close to zero.

The per-person math, ranked

Using October 2026 list prices:

  • Family split 6 ways: ~$3.67/person
  • Family split 4 ways: ~$5.50/person
  • Student: $6.99/person
  • Duo split 2 ways: ~$9.50/person
  • Individual: $12.99/person

The pattern is obvious: Spotify rewards sharing. A solo non-student pays nearly double what a student pays and more than triple the per-person cost of a full Family plan.

Paying less than list price

  • Gift cards: Spotify gift cards go on sale at major retailers, especially around holidays. They credit your account at face value, so a discounted card is a direct discount on months of Premium.
  • Check web vs. app pricing: subscribing through an app store has historically cost more than subscribing on Spotify's website. Compare both before you pay.
  • Student + Hulu: if the Hulu bundle is still active and you'd subscribe to Hulu anyway, treat the Student plan as essentially the price of Hulu with Spotify attached.
  • Carrier and broadband bundles: some mobile and broadband providers include Spotify Premium with their plans or as an add-on perk. Check your carrier's perks page before paying full price — a bundle you already qualify for beats any discount hunt.
  • No annual plan in the US: Spotify doesn't currently offer an annual-billing discount stateside. If one appears, divide by twelve and compare against the monthly rate before committing.

The bottom line

Pick the tier that matches your household, not the one with the lowest sticker price. Solo and eligible? Student at $6.99/mo. Two people at one address? Duo at $18.99/mo. Three or more? Family at $21.99/mo wins on per-person cost every time. Solo and not a student? Individual at $12.99/mo is your only option — soften it with discounted gift cards. And whatever you choose, confirm the current price on Spotify's official Premium page first; 2026 pricing has already moved once.
